STOP right where you are!!

Don't read any further!!

Whatever you do, don't scroll down the page!!

There's a MONSTER at the end of this blog post!

Well... what do you know... you're still here!  You must really want to know what's going to happen at the end of this blog post!

There's a book I read to my little girl called, "There's a Monster at the End of this Book".  The book tells the children that whatever they do they should NOT turn the page because that will get them closer to the end of the book and there's a MONSTER at the end of the book!"

[SPOILER ALERT] When you get to the end of the book you find the Monster is really Grover.  He's been telling the story and warning the children not to turn the page.  When the book comes to an end he realizes that he's the Monster at the end of the book.  He's not a a scary Monster at all so he's a bit embarrassed by all the fuss he's created during the story.

My little girl loves this book! She can't wait to turn the page!  She's eager, giggly and curious.  Even when we first read it and she was a bit uncertain about what she would find at the end of the book, she couldn't wait to get to the end.  We've read it a 1000 times and it's no different than it was the first time we read it. She can't wait to see the Monster!

Last week I had a chance to read this book to another little child.  This child was very uncertain about what would happen at the end of the book. They seemed worried, anxious and a bit fearful.  When we got to the end and they realized who the Monster was, they seemed a bit let down by the entire thing.  They were expecting a Monster and when they found out it was only Grover, they didn't like it.  It was obvious this book would never be one they asked for again.  They were terribly disappointed!

This book is a lot like social media.  Everyone has different expectations.  Some are excited, bubbly and can't wait to jump in and see what happens.  Once they realize what it will take to succeed, they are just as excited to continue their social networking efforts. They happily jump in and keep repeating the tasks it will take to make them successful online.  It's fun for them!  It also ends up being very profitable.

Others are waiting for the Monster at the end.  They are looking for the Holy Grail.  They are searching for that one secret... that one activity... that one tool that will make them successful with social media and bring in lots of sales.

[SPOILER ALERT] There is no one secret or one activity or one tool you can use to make you successful at social media.  Successful online networking is a combination of knowledge, content, conversations, strategy and consistent effort over the long term.  It's hard work.  It's joining networks, creating content, participating, listening, evaluating and taking action. It's getting up every day knowing that your target audience is online and it's up to you to find them, solve their problems and engage them in a way that will ultimately benefit you both.

Some people love it. Others hate it.  No one can deny that it's an essential part of business these days.

The question is... are you committed to engaging the Monster?
